Alphabet Games
Alphabet games are a great way to help children learn the names and sounds of each letter in the alphabet. These fun activities can also help kids recognize specific letters and words that start with those letters, too.
To play this game, students sit in a circle and remove one card from a set of upper & lower case alphabet cards. They then lay down a pair of cards. The next student then takes a random card from her neighbour and, if it matches the ones she already has, she lays them down for points.
Another great alphabet learning game is to have two teams face each other with their sets of alphabet cards spread out. When the teacher calls out a letter, students on Team A should try to find and name a word that starts with that letter before Team B can. The first team to do so wins a point. To make this activity more challenging, increase the number of letters and/or the time limit.
Word Games
Word games for kids that involve learning words, their definitions, or synonyms help boost vocabulary and reading comprehension. They also promote out-of-the-box thinking.
For example, a simple word game involves writing out a short word and asking the players to think of new words by changing just one letter from it (e.g. park – part – dart / mark – cart – care – case). This requires problem-solving skills and encourages creativity.
Another fun word game is to write out a list of subjects and ask your child to go through the alphabet and name something that begins with each letter. They can then write down the names of each subject on a sheet and count up to see who has the most at the end.
This is a great way to teach rhyming words and can be extended with Hink Pinky for two-syllable words or Hinketty Pinketty for three-syllable words. Alternatively, you can play this in a group and encourage each player to make up their own rhyming words.

Matching games are some of the best, classic kids games for fostering concentration, visual discrimination and memory. These games also help build observational skills.

This game is a great way to teach and reinforce place value, as players roll two dice and decide whether to keep the number they roll or bump it up to the tens place.
